We live in a modern society that is surrounded by electronics, new scientific discoveries and a speed of communication hitherto unknown. Some people believe that we should continue to focus on this area as part of our education, whereas others like to look to backwards to History to learn and believe that understanding where we came from is more important than knowing where we’re going.
Looking at the belief that Science and Technology is of higher value than history, personally I agree that the continued advanced and development of our world is paramount. As a species it is in our nature to investigate, innovate and create and therefore must continue the forward movement through our time. Examples of this would include the search for ET, developing a human space program, not to mention the eventual understanding of how the universe works.
Looking at the other side of this argument, there is no doubt that understanding history has its advantages. To my mind understanding and potentially learning from previous mistakes is sometimes applicable even when you are dealing with the new and unknown. For example, the development of new energy sources, such as cold fusion or even just regular fusion. The potential for good is boundless, but so is its potential for harm. Just look at the atom bomb and Mr. Nobel. There are things to be learnt from that.
Overall, in my opinion they both have advantages and disadvantages but people need to progress and I am the type of person that believes more in the future than the past. (261 words)

There is a famous saying that those who do not study the errors in history are doomed to repeat them. With the drive for scientific and technological education leading to the increasing marginalization of history as an academic subject, I think the need to preserve history as a fundamental field is more important than ever before.
A very basic overview of significant historical events reveals that many aspects of change are cyclical. Understanding these cycles, such as the ebb and flow of technological advancement, and being able to recognize the state of one’s present era based on historical precedents is an incredibly useful skill for students to acquire. For example, enterprising students who seek to earn a living through investment or entrepreneurship could benefit immensely by understanding the historical problems a region has had and still is facing.
This is not to say that science and technology courses are not important. It is a vital necessity for everyone nowadays to have some modicum of tech savvy if they are to function in day-to-day life. For example, the proliferation of high-tech devices throughout society means that every person must have a basic understanding of how these devices function in order to use them. Also, there is a strong point to be made for the career opportunities in science and technology fields compared to ones related to history. The most likely job prospects for those who focus on history are academic fields, such as teachers, museum curators, and writers, whereas science and technology majors have a very wide range of jobs to choose from. Yet these facts do not supersede the need for a historical education. In fact, if students focus only on the scientific and technological fields, and ignore history, they may develop poor attitudes towards technology due to a lack of historical context.
In short, my opinion is that history classes are as important now as they have ever been, and the need for an understanding of science and technology does not negate this. ( 337 words)
