1 Early in life Martha Graham learned that "movement never lies." When she was a little girl, her father warned her never to lie because he would always know it by the tensions in her body. Later, while studying dance as a young woman, Graham remembered her father’s warning. She tried to tell the truth in her dances, even if the truth was unpleasant.
2 Inventing a new language of movement, Graham used the human body to express the passion and ecstasy of the human experience. Just as many modern dancers had before her, Graham invented her style as she went along. Her early technique was notorious for its nervous jerking and trembling. However, it was not irrational because it was aligned with a fundamental fact of life: breathing. Studying the bodily changes that occur during inhalation and exhalation, she developed the principles known as contraction and release. She experimented with the dynamics of the process, allowing contractions to take on a whip-like intensity. Whereas classical ballet attempted to conceal effort, Graham sought to reveal it because she believed that life required exertion. Graham’s characteristic percussive style enabled her to express emotional extremes.
3 Always a vehicle for human passion, Graham’s immense body of work prompted both praise and controversy. Although critics faulted her for obscurity or obscenity, Graham’s audiences were enthralled. Perhaps her defining work was "Chronicle," a 1936 dance drama that portrayed the darkness and isolation of the Great Depression and the Spanish Civil War. Her later productions were so rich in terms of music and design that they left audiences spellbound. [br] The word enthralled in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to
