Poetry Writing Course to be Canceled
For many years now, the humanities department has offered a poetry writing course every fall semester. Beginning next year, however, the poetry writing course will no longer be offered. According to the chair of the department the course is being canceled because of declining enrollment in recent years. "The classes have gotten a lot absence," she said, "So it’s not worthwhile to continue offering them." She added that students who want to take a poetry writing course in the future will be able to register for a similar course at the nearby States University.
Now listen to two students discussing the article.
Using points from the newspaper article, explain the man’s reasons for disagreeing with the university’s decision.
Now listen to two students discussing the article.
W: Didn’t you take that course last year?
M: Yeah and I think what they’re doing is terrible.
W: But was the class really small like the article says?
M: Well, sure. There weren’t that many of us, but in fact I think the small size actually made it more worthwhile, not less.
W: Yeah?
M: Yeah… I think with this kind of class it really helps if it’s small. You get lots of attention from the professor. That’s important. You really need the professor’s feedback and comments with writing.
W: So you’re saying in a bigger class, you wouldn’t learn as much?
M: Right. In this kind of class, you need individualized attention… more time with the professor; a benefit you don’t get in a large class and also, the States University option? That’s not going to work.
W: How come?
M: Well because unless you have a car it’s pretty hard to get there. I mean, it takes like more than an hour on a bus.
W: Oh yeah, that’s true. I guess it’s not that close if you’re taking public transportation.
M: No and most students here don’t have cars.
W: So that would be really inconvenient.
M: Exactly. Traveling back and forth all the time. You’d be on the bus a lot.

答案     The humanities department has decided to cancel the poetry writing course that has been offered for years. The chair of the department explains that the cancellation is due to its decreasing popularity among students, evidenced by the drop of enrollment and the increase of class absence. The department believes that it’s not worthwhile to continue offering the course. The department also offers an alternative: students can register for a similar course at another nearby university. The man strongly objects to the cancellation of the poetry writing class. He believes that the smaller the class size, the more worthwhile it’s. When the class is small, each student can get individualized feedback and comments with which they can improve their writing. Besides, taking a similar class in another university is highly inconvenient, Students who don’t have cars will need to spend much time traveling between the two campuses by bus.
