答案     lt has been a popular practice to make best-sellers into movies. Many movies adapted from well-known books have achieved success, for example, the Harry Porter series. Some people like to read the book first before watching the movie and others might want to reverse the order. Generally speaking, I prefer reading the book in advance for a better appreciation of the movie.
l will understand the movie more profoundly with the knowledge about the story. Reading the book helps readily create a better understanding of the characters and the storyline. So when I watch it, I won’t get lost in the story, and I can even understand better why some details are considered important and reflective of the book by the director to be included in the movie. Another important reason is that books offer more details and descriptions while movies are usually limited in length and tend to follow some set patterns to attract audience. Consequently, movies may end up lacking many gripping details yet adding some that are not relative to the main plot scenes, or even worse, being too threadbare to arouse audience’s interest in the book. I once tried to watch the movie Me Before You without reading the book and it turned out to be very banal and I lost interest in reading the book. Yet, a few years ago when I decided to read it, I understood that a lot of details were missing in the movie and those details would have helped tell a better story.
Although movies can be creative, in my perspective, a book-based movie is an interpretation of the book. Watching the movie before reading the book may hamper my appreciation of the book, and not the other way around.
Reading before watching will help me not only form an idea of the book, but also make sense of the director’s way of interpreting the book. Such intellectual exchanges will no doubt enrich movie-viewing experience. To conclude, I prefer to read the book, develop my thoughts of the book, and then discover how other people interpret the book by watching the movie.
