Canada weathered the financial crisis well. No bank needed to be rescued; the World Economic Forum anointed Canada’s banking system the soundest in the world. To diversify energy trade — almost all its oil exports currently head south — the prime minister has also thrown his weight behind a proposed pipeline that would redirect Alberta’s crude to Asia. But all this will take time. And Mr. Harper can no longer boast that Canada, smallest of the G7 economies, is leading the pack.
