答案          A Proplsal for Better Use of the Television Set in the Campus Center
   Director, leaving the campus center yesterday for class, I found myself stuck in the daily pedestrian jam on the second-floor landing. People by the dozens had gathered on the stairway for their daily dose of "General Hospital. "Fighting my way through the mesmerized bodies, l wondered about the appropriateness of the television set’s location, and of the value of the shows aired on this set.
   Along with the recent upsurge of impoevements at our school (in curriculum and standards), we should be considering ways to better use the campus center television. The tube plays relentlessly, offering soap operas and game shows to the addicts who block the stairway and main landing. Granted, television for students to enjoy between classes is a fine idea, but no student needs to attend college to watch soap operas. By moving the set and improving the programs, we could eliminae the congestion and enrich the learning experience.
   The television needs a better location: out of the way of people who don’t care to watch it, and into a larger, more comfortable setting for those who do. Background noise in the present location makes the set barely audible; and the raised seating in front of the set places the viewers on exhibit to all who walk by. A far better location would be the back wall of the North Lounge, outside th Sunset Room--a large, quiet, and comfortable space. Various meetings sometimes helped in this room could be moved instead to the browsing area of the library.
   More important than the set’s location is the quality of its programs. Videotaped movies might be a good alternative to the shows now aired. Our audiovisual department has a rich collection of excellent movies and educational programs on tape. People could request the shows they would like to see, and a student committee could be responsible for printing showtime information.
   The set might also serve as a primary learning tool by allowing communications students to create their won shows. Our school has the videotaping and sound equipment, and would need only a faculty adviser to supervise the project. Students from Script Writing, Drama, Political Science, and Journalism classes (to name a few) could combine their talents, providing shows of interest to their peers. We now have a student news program that is aired evenings on a local channel, but many who live some distance of campus cannot receive this channel on their sets at home. Why not make the program accessible to students during the day, here on campus?
   With resources already in our possession, we can make a few changes that will benefit almost everyone. Beyond providing more efficient use of campus center space, these changes could really stimulate people’s minds. I urge you to allow students and faculty to vote on the questions of moving the television set and for improving its programs.
