   Coached by Visiouary Percy Cerutty, the lean tough Australian was the perfect racing machine during an unbeaten career in his specialist distances.
   Employing training methods then regarded as revolutionary, intensive weight training and grulling runs up steep sand dunes, Elliot shattered the world mile record and won a Commonwealth double reward for the mile and 880 yards (804metres) events at the 1958 Cardiff Games.His finest hour came in the 960 Rome Olympics where he led from start to finish in the 1,500-metre final to win by an extraordinary 20-metre margin in a world record three minutes 35.6 seconds.
