The authorities in China have rushed more than 3,000,000 doses of bird flu vaccine to the western province of Qinghai after migrating geese were found dead from the disease. It’s the first time the strain H5N1 has been detected in the country since officials began introducing precautions last year.

   "China has hundreds of millions of domesticated ducks and chickens. If a large-scale outbreak of avian flu were to occur it could be devastating. So Beijing has ordered the immediate vaccination of all domesticated poultry across the whole west of the country. 3,000,000 birds will be vaccinated this week alone. The Chinese government has also ordered scientists to trace the routes of migratory birds across China to see if dead birds may have turned up elsewhere. Qinghai is remote and sparsely populated. But if the virus were to reach densely populated areas of central China, the story could be very different."
