Iranian officials say the hardline mayor of Tehran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has won a clear victory in the presidential election over his rival, Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani. Unnamed members of the Interior Ministry say Mr. Ahmadinejad has gained around 60 percent of the vote. Aides to Mr. Rafsanjani say they believe their candidate has lost. D. K. of the BBC’s Persian service says Mr. Ahmadinejad is a conservative, who advocated social justice and returns to the strict Islamic values of the Iranian Revolution.
   "Ahmadinejad was running an election campaign that was based on very general ideas like helping deprived people, like trying to stop this widening gap between those who have and those who have not as he says. In terms of social policies, he’s going to be very strict. Based on his background, he’s going to restrict some of the social freedoms that Iranian youth have asked for and have actually obtained, if indeed he has won."
