问题     According to an article from Language Tips, earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010. "It just seemed like it was back-to-back and it came in waves," said Craig Fugate, who heads the US Federal Emergency Management Agency. "But there is hope. And the hope is if we can change the way we do things—our institutions, and our practices—we can manage ecosystems sustainably. " What is your view on this? Write an essay of 400 words on the following topic: Change and Hope.
In the first part of your writing you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second part you should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary.
Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

答案                             Change and Hope
The past year of 2010 witnessed a dominance of excessive and extreme weather, as well as natural disasters around the world. Even though many catastrophes have the ring of random chance, scientists and disasters experts claim that we have ourselves to blame most of the time, because some human activities have harmed the natural environment and upset the balance of the ecosystem. Therefore, positive changes from different levels are desperately desired for a rosy future.
First and foremost, policymakers worldwide must attach importance to the ecological damage and decide quickly to change their course. It is indeed alarming to know that more than fifty percent of the world’s forests have been wiped out since the 1950s, and the relentless depletion of the forests to make way for land development and agricultural purposes has proven to have devastating effects on the ecosystem and biosphere as a whole. Obviously, government leaders must not only shoulder the responsibility of increasing the economic growth and living quality of their people, but also bear the duty of keeping up sustainable development for future generations. For this very purpose, strict laws and policies must be made to prevent overexploitation of natural resources, even if doing so requires that some industrial growth be sacrificed.
In addition, the individual needs to change behaviour in order to avoid or reduce the impact on natural phenomena. Actually, each one of us, in our own little comfortable ways, contributes daily to the existing destruction. It’s time now to awaken to the respect and attention the earth deserves. For those dealing with paper work, an easy way to cut the amount of paper that goes into the trash is to perfect all documents before you print them, which will reduce the amount of paper that you use, save money, and help protect the environment. While shopping, remember to bring a cloth bag or string bags, and do not buy products from endangered animals. Simple habits like this, though of trifling importance, will surely make a difference and bring about a friendlier environment.
There is no denying that to save the earth in trouble we need to put in more effort, besides adopting wise national policies and raising individual awareness on the issues. Better education, new technology, and higher penalties for environmental vandalism are also needed to put a brake on the damage being done. Hopefully, the series of changes will give our mother earth a rebirth.
