答案                     The Advantages of Gap Year in China
Recently, taking a gap year has been gaining popularity for high school students. They can choose to travel around the world, take an internship or participate in volunteer programs. Although the idea of "gap year" has been a common practice in western countries, it is still new to both Chinese students and parents. A debate is therefore inevitably touched off. Some hold that taking a year off school is simply a waste of time, while others support it by arguing that it brings more benefits than harms to students. As for me, the advantages of gap year far outweigh its disadvantages.
First of all, taking a gap year helps students to refresh themselves and better prepare for the upcoming campus life and challenge. After spending 12 years on rigorous and intense study in China, gap year is exactly providing high school graduates an opportunity to take a break, not only physically but also psychologically. During the gap year, students can remove the academic study and experience something totally different from what they used to do at school. Moreover, they would finally have more time to do the so-called "self-reflection", that is, to think about life, actions and motives of their own. This can be a positive transition from family home to college dorm life and from adolescent to adult
Secondly, taking a gap year helps students to gain social experience. Students in China have been criticized as "flowers in the greenhouse" because they are well protected at home and school and know nothing about what is going on in the real world. Before commencing a new chapter in their life, travelling as a backpacker or working as an intern will help students to see what society is like. As the saying goes, "Seeing is believing." They can now acquire experience from real practice, not textbooks. Full-time working, for example, can equip them with practical skills instead of bookish theories and also enable them to realize the difficulties of securing a livelihood and the importance of mastering professional knowledge and skills. So when students truly immerse themselves in social life during the gap year, they will have a clearer goal and stronger motives during their study in university.
To sum up, the advantages of gap years are obvious. It provides students with a chance to refresh themselves and to obtain some hands-on skills before they enter the university.
