The popularity of online bookstores is threatening the survival of many privately run bookshops in China. It is a fact beyond disputes that bookstores are losing their customers to online ones. As a college student, what measures would you recommend to save physical bookstores? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:
How to Save Physical Bookstores?

How to Save Physical Bookstores?
Bookstores are dying: with rapid development of more convenient online bookstores, a lot of physical bookstores are forced to go out of business because less and less people are willing to buy books in physical bookstores. Under such circumstance, people are discussing how to save endangered bookstores. As far as I am concerned, being cheaper and being unique are two key points in the revitalization of physical bookstores.
First of all, in order to survive in the competition with online bookstores, physical ones have to control their price of books. A very important reason why people choose to buy books online is that they can save a lot of money that way. Typically, online bookstores offer discounts of up to 40%, while physical ones give very few or even no discounts at all. Apparently one would not want to spend more money on the exactly same book. Therefore, in order for physical bookstores to survive, adjusting the pricing of books should be the first step. Physical bookstores should consider attracting more customers by giving special offers and membership discounts. They should perhaps also cooperate with publishers to get lower prices for some books. In this way, customers would at least be more willing to step into a bookstore.
Secondly, physical bookstores should also be more unique to lure customers. Online bookstores are usually very huge, and people have to browse through pages of book descriptions to get what they want. The edge of physical bookstores is that the books they sell are immediately tangible. People can touch them, hold them and even read them before they decide to buy them. Physical bookstores should take advantage of this. They can have a display of selected books of the same genre for people to read. They can provide reading areas for customers. They can even set up in-store cafe. In that way physical bookstores would not only be selling books; they would also be selling a culture of reading, an atmosphere in which people can calm down, sit back and reflect on their own lives. It would be a unique experience which online bookstores cannot offer.
To conclude, in order to survive, physical bookstores should control the price of books and take advantage of their unique features. Traditional bookstores would definitely be loved if they provide cheaper books and fine reading atmosphere.
