问题     Nowadays, the world population has been increasing sharply, there might be various reasons for the trend. Then , what is your opinion?
Sharp Increase in World Population
    You are to write a paper of approximately 400 words on this issue.
    In the first part of your paper, you should present your interpretation of the pictures above and in the second part you should give your reasons for the increase in population with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion with a summary.
    Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

答案             Sharp Increase in World Population
    According to the figures given in the bar charts, it took from the begining of human life to the year 1830 for the population of the earth to reach one billion. That represents a time span of at least two million years. Then the world population increased rapidly, adding up to two billion in 1930. The next billion was added by 1960, only thirty years. From then on the global population was on the rise, amounting to 4 billion in 1975, which is another billion people in only 15 years. From the figures , we can find that the world population has increased sharply in recent centuries.
    There are at least two reasons, I think, for the sharp increase in world population. In the first place, the birth rate is continuously climbing in many countries, especially in developing countries. Generally speaking, people there hold the opinion that children don’t cost much and when they get old enough to work they will bring in money and that when parents are old, they will take care of them. That is so-called traditional idea of "more children, more happiness", which influences people’s idea of child - bearing in many developing countries especially some Asian countries. Another reason may be that some religions forbid abortion, which contributes to the rising birth rate. What’s more, some families in certain countries think it is better to have more sons, so they keep having children until they have a son even if they have already given birth to many girls. Because of the above -mentioned reasons, the birth rate in developing countries has been increasing sharply.
    In my opinion, the chief reason for the population growth is not so much a rise in birth rate as a fall in death rate as a result of improvements in medical care.
