问题     College graduates have a strong preference for the city where their schools locate. The number of graduates staying in central cities is far larger than that of those who leave. Many graduates are still confused about the question—which is better, first or second-tier cities? Upon graduation, more and more graduates decide to seek employment in second-tier cities. However, a large number of graduates still pour into the first-tier cites to make their dreams real. Should one "stick to" a metropolis or "retreat to" a second-tier city?     Upon graduation, millions of graduates are facing this problem—whether to stay in the city where they have been living for 4 years, to go back hometown, or head for the second-tier cities? Many of them prefer to stay or even go to bigger cities because a metropolis is regarded as a promise of fortune and success. Still others chose to go back to their hometown because of the comfortable lifestyle. To stay or to leave? That is the question. There seems a trend among graduates in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou to desert the biggest cities and move to the second-tier cities. In my opinion, going back to one’s hometown or moving to the second-tier cities is the more practical choice.
    First of all, the cost of living should be a major concern for graduates. Although big cities provide graduates with more job opportunities that other cities don’t have, the cost of living in a big city cannot be ignored. The pressure of buying a house and living costs means fresh graduates are barely able to breathe. However, a life in one’s hometown or in a second-tier city is much easier. With help from friends and family, locating a satisfactory job in a second-tier city and buying a house is not an untouchable dream.
    Secondly, work pressure makes many graduates exhausted both in body and mind. The first-tier cities have plenty of talent, and that makes it hard for a young graduate to be outstanding. In contrast, working in smaller cities is helpful for young graduates who want to become dominant players in their positions. Besides, the salary in the second-tier cities is no less than that in the first-tier cities. Many graduates who already found a job in the second-tier cities are already beginning to buy a house or start a family.
    Thirdly, though the level of development in the second-tier cities is still lagging behind the first-tier cities, the long term prospects in the second-tier cities are promising. The population and other aspects in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou are becoming saturated. However, the second-tier cities are just beginning to take part in the competition, and space for development is still to be exploited. Also, graduates in the second-tier cities have less concern for the threat of new talents. The promise of a stable career development prospect is the most attractive advantage over the first-tier cities.
    Taking all the above analyses into account, going back to one’s hometown or a second-tier cities is the more realistic choice. High living costs, work pressure and fierce competition are all reasons that college graduates desert the first-tier cities. The second-tier cities have pleasant environments, promising career development prospects and comfortable lifestyle; going back to the hometown or the second-tier cities is not a behavior of retreat but choosing with reason.
