Until recently, most population growth has occurred in relatively dense
urban environments. In another words, even if we were witnessing rapid【S1】______
population growth, that would not mean that the countryside was filled with【S2】______
people. However, the urban areas would tend to become crowded.【S3】______
Historically, we find that people have moved to there the jobs were. Jobs【S4】______
were usually in ports or locations with many natural resources. After
transportation became relatively cheap, geographical locations became【S5】______
channels of economic activity. One factor that determines where people will
move to, even when transportation becomes cheap, is income. And
individuals working in cities earn higher incomes than those working in rural
areas. Hence, population has tended until the 1970s to decrease in our major【S6】______
urban centers.
Recently, population has shifted out of the Northeast to the South and to
the West. The South and the West have more pleasant climates. If people did【S7】______
not benefit from living in large cities, there would likely be a much more even
population distribution throughout our entire land area. Probably if this is the
case, there would be less concern in population explosion. Indeed, one need【S8】______
only arrange a cross-country drive or plane trip to realize sparsely populated【S9】______
these United States really are. This is not to say that we should or should not
do something about population growth. The shortage of people in certain
areas merely demonstrates that overpopulation in the US is really only a
problem in overcrowded urban environments. And this problem may be slow【S10】______
correcting itself. [br] 【S1】
