M: Oh my god, all of these sound so familiar. But what should we do if the signs of IAD begin to emerge?
W: Don’t panic. Some doctors discount the notion of IAD. (6) They claim that IAD is not the same as drug addiction, because the Internet is a useful tool for getting information, and also a multi-faceted tool for communication.
M: So you mean, um, addiction to the Internet is not that horrible?
W: What I am saying is that there is so much to do online that it takes a lot of time. If we think about that for a minute, it makes some sense. My, um, my husband, for example, uses the Internet for just about everything. The computer for him is a communication center, television, office, store, and music player. (7) Yet still, most people agree that it’s not good to spend too much time on the Internet. Everything in moderation, right?
M: I once read in a US newspaper that a woman was on the Internet so often that her husband left her, and she forgot to buy food for her children. A Chinese magazine also told stories of children who skipped school and stayed in cybercafes all day. It is said that some of them didn’t sleep, and their hands became numb.
W: Tragedies like these do happen almost every day.
M: So what can be done to help people like this?
W: Sadly though, well, doctors aren’t sure. IAD is new, so they do not have much experience in treating it. (8) Some are trying programs similar to those that help people stop smoking and gambling. Ivan Goldberg, the doctor who invented the term IAD, says people who think they might be addicted to the Internet should try to help themselves.
M: Can you explain Dr. Goldberg’s advice in detail?
W: Sure. (9) First, Goldberg advises them to examine their patterns of Internet use. They should know how much time they spend on the computer, and also should ask themselves how often they think about the Internet.
M: To put the first advice into simple words: time control. Am I right?
W: Absolutely. Then they should ask why they use the computer so much, are they escaping from a problem or something.
M: Which means they have to question themselves now and then?
W: Yes. And the third step is to make a plan to solve the problem, as opposed to just ignoring it. Finally, they should make a plan to reduce their Internet use, such as trying to reduce their computer time a little bit each day. (10) Doctor Samuel Augusti who has studied IAD says it’s important to keep a balanced life.
M: I totally agree with this doctor. Time on the Internet should not distract people from doing other things they like, and it should not cause people to miss spending time with their family and friends.
W: You are right.
