This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the International Atomic Energy Agency and its Egyptian director General Mohamed E1 Baradei. The Nobel Committee said the award was in recognition of the work to promote the safe and peaceful application of nuclear energy and prevent its use from military purposes. The Nobel Committee in Norway said the award was in recognition of their work to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy. From Oslo here is Lars Bevanger:
     Awarding the prize to Mr. El Baradei and the IAEA will be seen by many as a strong signal from the Nobel Committee to Iran to get in line with the United Nations agency and much of the international community and stop its nuclear program. Tehran reacted angrily two years ago when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the liberal Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi. The Norwegian Nobel committee might have seen the need to boost the work of the IAEA after an international conference failed to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty earlier this year.
