Congress in Mexico has voted to strip the mayor of Mexico City off his immunity from prosecution, a move that could force him out of the election contest. The left-wing mayor Lopez Obrador has been accused by prosecutors of contempt of court during a land dispute. Mr. Lopez Obrador says this is a government-backed plot to stop him winning the presidency next year.
     His opponents argued that he had shown contempt for the rule of law, and democratic accountability. Earlier, tens of thousands had gathered in Mexico City’s main square to support their mayor, the most popular politician in the country. They likened this process to a coup and demanded that all charges be dropped.
