问题     Listen to the following passage. Altogether the passage will be read to you four times. During the first reading, which will be done at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds. The last reading will be done at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work. You will then be given 2 minutes to check through your work once more.

    The greatest advantage of books does not always come from / what we remember of them, but from their suggestiveness. / A good book often serves as a match to light the powder within us / and wake up our latent possibilities. / We form many of our opinions from our favorite books. / The author whom we prefer is our best teacher: / we look at the world through his eyes. / If we habitually read books that are elevating in tone, / pure in style, sound in reasoning, and keen in sight, / our minds develop the same characteristics. / If, on the contrary, we read weak or vicious books, / our minds contract the faults and vices of the books. / We can’t escape the influence of what we read / any more than we can escape the influence of the air that we breathe. / Whatever you read, learn to absorb the most knowledge / and convert it into character. /
