Turkish riot police fought Kurdish protestors for a second day Saturday, as Kurdish New Year celebrations deteriorated into demonstrations in favor of separatist rebels. Turkish police were called to the scene in the city of Van in southeastern Turkey. Large groups of protestors were seen hurling stones at police there. Authorities responded by hitting demonstrators with batons and firing tear gas to disperse a crowd of about 3000 people who gathered in that city of Van. The state-run Anatolia News Agency says at least 60 people were injured including police officers and many protestors who were detained. Clashes also took place in other cities in southeastern Turkey.
