The Sri Lankan police are reported to have said that they’ ve found evidence of a plot to set up a military regime if President Chandrika Kumaratunga had been assassinated in an attempt at her life last month. Sri Lankan radio quotes the police as saying that the suicide bomb attack which injured the President was part of a conspiracy involving dissatisfied businessmen, opposition figures and military officers as well as the Tamil separatist rebels who were blamed for it. The radio said that wealthy businessmen had been financing the Tamil Tiger rebels and the opposition United National Party. It said more arrests were expected shortly.
