    As English is currently the most widely used language in the world, it seems clear that one will be better off if he or she has a good command of English. However, the strong focus on the study of English in China is like "putting a cart before a horse". I believe Chinese education, including studying Chinese-related subjects, is much more crucial than English learning for the following reasons.
    First and foremost, more focus should be placed on the study of Chinese in schools as it carries with it not only cultural significance but also a sense of pride and purpose. Chinese plays an irreplaceable part in the thought processes and spirit of Chinese heritage and civilization. Secondly, with the promotion of China’s international standing, increasingly more foreigners are eager to know more about China and its culture. Even if you are a master of English, poor knowledge of your own language, history and culture will impede your communication about Chinese-related topics with foreigners. Last but not least, Chinese culture is really in danger now, and we are losing the cultural identity in facing the cultural globalization and the overemphasis of English. For instance, celebrating Chinese traditional festivals is losing popularity in some big cities while foreign festivals are coming in and taking over.
    In short, it is now becoming urgent to save our language and culture. Chinese should preside over other subjects and the prominence of English study should be reduced significantly.
