A collective complaint about the declining morality in China has been triggered by a succession of undesirable behavior exposed by the media. The public attention is focused on one imperative task; how can we reclaim the lost morality?
In the first place, since the public acquire most of their information from newspapers, TV and the Internet, the media has an unshirkable responsibility to encourage good virtues in the public. Reports about role models, stories about the kind being rewarded and the wicked being punished can all serve as powerful inspirations. When such concepts are instilled into people’s mind, they will not turn blind eyes to those in need, because their conscience will be tortured. In the second place, regulatory and legislative institutions are also compulsory steps to reclaim the declining morality. Personally, I believe human nature is good at birth, but people cannot always watch their own behavior because that involves a lot of restrictions and loss of personal interests and comfort. Such being the case, regulations and laws are needed to monitor people’s behavior. In the third place, education is the fundamental solution to the problem. Schools should not only be the place where students acquire knowledge and pass exams, but also the place where responsible and righteous citizens are cultivated. Likewise, parents should not merely care about their children’s academic performance, and instead they should pay more attention to what kind of persons their children are becoming.
Morality is the foundation of a wholesome society and therefore the reconstruction needs the effort of every member of it.
