    Should Westernized Place Names Be Driven Out?
    A residential community in a small city in China has been named Venice. Another is named Manhattan after the famous New York borough. These are just a couple of examples of the current phenomenon sweeping construction sites across China: naming them after Western landmarks.
    Some worry that the trend of using foreign place names as well as bizarre, exaggerated names, such as calling a community a garden even though there is no actual garden to speak of, is eroding local and traditional culture. Many argue that the penetration of these names could create inconvenience and even confuse residents, especially senior citizens who are used to traditional names.
    The Chinese Government has recently launched an initiative to address these concerns. The naming of streets, residential communities and parks will be standardized, with names deemed inappropriate and those used by several places being cut from the list of acceptable monikers.
    Some people think these names are just a symbol, so it’s unnecessary to be too serious about their naming.
    "Today, foreign names can be seen everywhere, particularly on commercial buildings, and real estate developers are increasingly naming residential communities in an international style. Superficially, these are just names. But if you look deeper, you will see that this penetration of foreign names will have a negative impact on traditional Chinese culture." Said Guo Xilin, from Chinese Journal Net.

    The recent years have witnessed the prevailing trend in China that many places and buildings are named after foreign names, such as Venice and Manhattan. Some people worry that the side effects of the naming trend may erode the traditional Chinese culture, while others are not so serious about it, holding names are just a symbol. In my opinion, westernized place names should be driven out.
    To begin with, obviously a nation will only culturally distinguish itself from others by keeping its own culture. And keeping the Chinese style of naming a place is a vital part of preserving the distinct Chinese culture. Secondly, many senior citizens, even the young, tend to be misled and confused by the foreign names that make no sense in Chinese pronunciation. Therefore, there are occasions that when it comes to the names of Victory Plaza, what occurs to some might be a totally different place with another foreign name pronounced similarly, Victoria Square, for example. Then we can see the place name would mean nothing to the people who confuse it with the other foreign name. Moreover, many westernized place names are only transliterated into Chinese, and therefore, their profound meaning is not easily delivered. The westernization of place names is merely a superficial form of internationalization and contributes nothing to china’s going international.
    In conclusion, the use of foreign names should be restricted by the Chinese government.
