问题     What is friendship or how should we define it? It is a simple but difficult question. People have different opinions concerning friendship. In Western countries, some people regard friendship as a gift from God to us human beings. (56) Some of us might say that friendship is trust and loyalty; and others might say that friendship is a process of sharing, caring, and communicating. You know, in the eye of some men of letters, friendship is an interpersonal relationship combining together trust, support, communication, loyalty, and understanding. We can also find similar definitions in some dictionaries. (57)But in our daily life, a written description does not seem to be necessary. The reason why we choose some people to make friends with may be quite simple. Perhaps we share common interests, support and love each other. Or perhaps there is no reason at all. We just have fun together. Do you remember your childhood? We did not know the exact meaning of friendship, but we made lots of friends.     Making friends is something that we will do all our lives. To many people, friendship comes naturally and easily wherever they go, but some people go through life with only a few friends. To many students, school is an excellent place to make friends, because students spend most of their time in class or participating in various community activities (like different clubs) , and extracurricular activities (like sports). These are good places to meet people and to make friends. Nowadays, some people are making friends through the Internet. While this can be an easy place to chat with people, it is not always a safe place to meet people for friendship, as there is probably no way of knowing whom you are chatting with when you are online. (58)Therefore, you are not to give out your personal information, such as your address, your phone number, or the name of your school. Besides, we should keep it in mind that friendship does not always come overnight. It may take time.
    Once a friendship is established, we should cherish it. We need to think about how to keep it and how to strengthen it. (59) Even if a friendship is strong, it is still important to work on it once in a while. In order to keep friendship, we should keep in touch with each other. We should give our friends honest and sincere appreciation from time to time and we should respect their space. We should learn to accept differences, learn how to avoid conflict and when a conflict emerges, we should find a resolution instead of criticizing, condemning or complaining. (60) And to win friends we should be thoughtful, that is, always try to put ourselves in another person’s shoes. Try not to hurt anybody. When we do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all. Likewise, if we think what we do will hurt somebody, do not do it. In this way, we can avoid hurting others’ feelings and we can avoid ruining a good relationship. [br]
