Chinese-American 21-year- old Michelle Kuan has achieved more than many people even dream of: she is a three-time US national champion, a two-time world champion, and won the 1998 Winter Olympics silver medal. And at the young age of 17, she published her autobiography (自传) Heart of a Champion. Yet this skating angel experienced failure at the Grand Prix. held in Ontario, Canada, earlier this month.
   She missed her chance for success by failing, lost to her longtime rival (对手), Russian Irina Slutskaya. She may have lost the gold medal on that occasion, but one thing she has never lost is her confidence. "It was really just a rehearsal for the coming Winter Olympic Games. That’s the stage I am setting for," Kwan said. "Knowing I have a challenger who is really good pushes me a little further and hopefully to my full potential (潜力). I want to be the best I can be."
   Born in California, Michelle Kean began figure skating at the age of five. She has grown from a kid skater to an artistic skater, but her decision to be the best has never changed. "Since I was a little girl, skating has always made me feel like I am flying," Kwan said. "I love to skate and skating is in my heart, not my head." Kwan practices and works very hard to improve. She stands out for her artistry--the Way she puts all the elements together to create her own style. She is able to make the story of the music come alive with emotion and meaning through her movements and expressions. "I want to be a legend (传奇人物)", she said. For years she has believed in the motto: Work hard, be yourself and have fun. She is sure this is the key to success.
   Indeed, Kwan is herself. She is a successful star and she is also an ordinary girl. She is a serious bargain shopper, keeps a diary, has posters of Hollywood star Brad Pitt and observes one superstition (迷信)--she never takes off the gold dragon necklace her grandmother gave her for luck.
