问题     It was once thought that air pollution affected only
the area immediately around large cities with factories
and/or heavy automobile traffic. Today we know that
because these are the areas with the worst air pollution,     【S1】______
the problem is literally world-wide. At several occasions     【S2】______
over the last decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has
covered the entire half of the United States and lead to      【S3】______
health warnings even in rural areas away from any minor       【S4】______
concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic.
What has been found that air pollution is killing trees in    【S5】______
the mountains of California and melons on the farms of
Indiana. In fact, the very weather of the entire earth        【S6】______
may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel
that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in
the air resulted from the burning of fossil fuels (coal       【S7】______
and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"   holding in
heat reflected to the earth and raising the world’s           【S8】______
average temperature. If this view is correct and that the     【S9】______
world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much
of ice cap will melt and cities such as New York,
Boston, Miami, or New Orleans will be under water.            【S10】______ [br] 【S10】
