John Shilling is a twenty-year-old student at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. It is a school, very different from Cornell University in New York State which is huge and famous. John could have gone to any college of his choice, but he chose this school because of its small size and its excellent program in his major field — physics. He likes Cornell as well as he expected to. There are just three students in his physics class, and the professor often invites the three to his home for dinner. While maintaining an "A" average in his studies,[33]John finds time to play on the football and tennis teams, and he has dates with his girlfriend, Linda Spies. They study together in the library or go for walks in the nearby meadow. Linda, who is majoring in elementary education, is one of the many college students who give free lessons to children of poor families in a city near Cornell.
John, like nearly half of his classmates,[34]has a scholarship that pays part of his college expenses. He works as a laboratory assistant to help pay other school bills, and during the summer he earns extra money at a factory in his hometown, Madison, Wisconsin.
John’s plan for the future is to teach physics for a few years in a university and then to devote his life to research in science.
32. Which school does John prefer?
33. What is one of John’s hobbies on the campus?
34. How does John manage to pay his college expenses?
35. What is John’s plan for the future?
选项
A、By doing tutor jobs.
B、By borrowing money from his classmates.
C、By having a scholarship.
D、By working in a public library.
答案
C
解析
细节题。文中提到,John的奖学金(scholarship)可以支付一部分学费,他做实验室助手来支付其余的学费,而他暑假在工厂工作是为了挣零用钱(extra money),[C]为John支付大学开支一种方式,故为答案。
