   Success hinges on many factors, among which are ability and attitude. The importance of the two factors is widely recognized, as stated in Sir Walter Scott’s words "For success, attitude is equally as important as ability."
   Ability, undoubtedly, is the basis of success. If one is not capable of an undertaking, success is only a mirage however eager he is. To be a competent teacher, for example, one needs to have an intimate knowledge of a certain field. Besides, he should be able to express himself effectively and has good communication with his students. An absence of such abilities will prevent one from becoming an excellent teacher.
   Equally as important if not more important is attitude. A positive attitude ensures that one tries his best to fulfill a task. For a man with a positive attitude, even if he has but limitted ability for the moment, it is reasonable to expect his future success in the long term. By contrast, for those having enormous capabilities but negative attitudes, not only arc they likely to end in failures, they will also lose others’ respect.
   In short, we cannot afford to underestimate the significance of attitude, as manifested in the frequently mentioned motto "attitude is everything. " Of course, attitude and ability working together will indubitably lead to success.
