W: How is the Argentinian economy now? There was a crash a few years ago, wasn’t there?
M: The crash was in 2001 and after that I don’t know. If you remember, we had five Presidents in three weeks.
W: I guess they all retired on full presidential salary.
M: (laughs) You are probably right. And since then it hasn’t really recovered. (13) The private economy has actually really increased because as a result of the currency devaluing by three times, all our labor costs are a lot cheaper.
W: What about agriculture, farming, for instance?
M: In the farming economy, we were doing very well until last year and now they are beginning to have deflation and so they are really hitting down on the private sector.
W: That’s bad. Are the prices of produce and meat going up as a result?
M: Not really. (14-1) The meat price is going down. We have to export beef so that there won’t be more meat on the national market. Otherwise, it will push the price of beef go further down.
W: (14-2) Export can help control deflation in this way?
M: (14-3) Right.
W: I remember Argentina was the richest country in South America ten years ago.
M: Argentina was the richest country in the world after the Second World War. And we are still the richest country in South America.
W: You sound proud.
M: I am proud of being a citizen of Argentina. (15) I’m sure our economy will be better soon.
