    In the picture above, an over-weight boy told his dad that he was doing exercise. However, all he did was lifting the remote control. What this picture wants to point out is the issue of child obesity.
    In China, up to one out of every eight children is overweight or obese, and this number is continuing to rise. Children become overweight and obese for a variety of reasons. The most common one is lack of physical activity. Today, many children spend a lot of time being inactive. For example , the average child spends approximately four hours each day watching television. As computers and video games become increasingly popular, the number of hours of inactivity may increase. Others include genetic factors, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. Unfortunately, childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression.
    In my opinion, physical education in schools should be made compulsory. Required PE classes can help students develop good exercise habits, thus resulting in healthier lifestyles.
