W: Good afternoon, Mr. Smith. Welcome to our program Protection of Animals. I know you have been involved in this field for many years. What triggered your dedication to it in the first place?
M: Well, I guess it’s the inborn love for animals. When I was a kid, my family was surrounded by all kinds of pets—birds, cats, and dogs.
W: I see. But it is quite strange that for a nation of pet-lovers, Britain has surprisingly few vegetarians—just 3% of the population, isn’t it?
M: Yes. To make things worse, our animal experimentation laboratories boast lower welfare standards than many of the other countries’, which is rather sad to see.
W: I guess that is why the number of peaceful protests against institutions that perform research on animals has increased markedly lately.
M: Yes. Peaceful protection is one of our means to show our anger and objection against animal experimentation. We have also formed some powerful lobby groups to persuade people against brutal animal experimentation.
W: Sounds quite encouraging. Do you get satisfactory results then?
M: Sadly though, there is more for us to shout about. Despite a ban on the testing of cosmetics and household products on animals, the number of experiments performed in Britain rose by almost 40% between 2000 and 2010 to 3. 7 million, while in France just 2. 5 million experiments were conducted in 2010 and the figure has been stable for many years.
W: It is sad to hear that. The reason for this increase may be that in some cases only animal tests are deemed sufficient. I heard that changes to the strict laws that require British scientists to consider alternatives to animal tests may be partially relaxed as a result of European reforms.
M: Yes. We have made an open protest against that legislation too. The Home Office is due to respond to our protest on this subject within the next few weeks.
W: I hope the officials would listen to you. Is there any other project in your program?
M: We have set-up Animal Aid, an organization targeting medicalcresearch charities. We wish that it can bring us suitable solutions in the near future.
