W: Hey, you are packing up. Where are you going? What will you do with those things?
M: I will throw them away. I am moving to another apartment, and I don’t need them anymore in the new room.
W: I see. Don’t throw those electronic wastes carelessly! They are dangerous for our environment! We should protect our environment as best as possible, because it can influence our lives and our children’s lives. Besides, some damage we make is beyond repair.
M: Really? What can I do with this broken cellphone and that old computer? Should I keep all these useless things and fill up my new room with these things that are outcof-date?
W: I don’t say that. But do you know that every year more than 10000 computer monitors become obsolete in the US alone? Electronic wastes are toxic and contaminate the soil if not recycled properly.
M: I have never heard of that. How do you know it?
W: Look at this. This battery contains poison, and this microchip contains arsenic and acid and other hazardous materials. Those materials are not only contaminating the soil, they can also damage the brain and have bad effects on our health.
M: Oh…I see. So where should I throw these things then?
W: You can drop your electronic wastes in the network box or sell them to be recycled.
M: Can I sell my garbage for money?
W: There are a lot of recycling companies which are willing to pay you a few bucks for your old stuff. Just search on the Internet for that information.
M: Alright, I think you are right. Sorry for being rude.
W: It’s OK. Why don’t you join an environmental protection volunteering project with me? We can do our bit to protect our environment.
M: I’d love that!
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
