Official United States statistics indicate that in 1996, 1.2 million people were admitted for alcoholism treatment in private and government facilities. Alcohol-related deaths are estimated at 100,000 per year. Accidents and cirrhosis(肝硬化) are the leading causes of death associated with excessive alcohol use, followed by high blood pressure, infections and cancer. Eighty percent of all cirrhosis and about one half of all accidental deaths, suicides and homicides are alcohol-related. The average per capita consumption(over 14 years of age) is 2.62 gallons(10 liters) of pure alcohol per year. Heavy drinkers, constituting about 10% of the drinking population, account for one-half of all alcohol consumed in the United States. It is estimated that alcohol creates problems for 18 million persons 18 years old or older. Both the level of alcohol consumption and the number of deaths attributed to an alcohol increased during the 1990s. Women drink significant drinking less than men; however, there has been an increase in drinking among women aged 35 to 64. People over age 65 consume less alcohol than younger adults and have lower prevalence of alcohol abuse. Studies in the Scandinavian countries and in Canada have shown that the price of alcoholic beverages(relative to the disposable income) is inversely(相反的) related to the total amount of alcohol consumed by the population. Cirrhosis in different countries has been shown to correlate almost perfectly with the per capita consumption by the population, with the United States showing about one-third of the incidence found in France. Some studies have shown that the frequency of coronary heart disease(冠心病) is lower in countries with higher per capita consumption of alcohol. However, others suggest that this is largely due to the fact that populations in these countries also have dietary patterns that by themselves lead to less coronary heart disease.
