    It is common for Chinese college students to spend several months even a whole year in the armed force to receive military training. Although students, their parents as well as the faculty strongly object to it, military training continues in many colleges and universities like a custom.
    People, especially policy makers place a high value on the military training for college students. They argue that it "does you good, both physically and mentally". "One year in the army", you often hear those people say, "will teach you a good lesson, and have a profound influence on your personality development." There may be an element of truths in the argument, for the students who have undergone military training can operate machine guns in the school playground and goose-step to attend classes. But these people fail to realize that when they return to academic life, they quickly forget all the military knowledge and hardships, leaving nothing but materials for their talk at the dinner table. What is deplored is that students spend one of the best and most formative years of their lives in the armed force engaged in activities which do not provide them with any useful experience with regard to their future work. Even worse, because their normal studies are disrupted, their academic career is often seriously affected and sometimes the whole course of their lives is altered.
    Since everyone knows that military training among college students doesn’t make any sense, why not abolish it altogether?
