In 1984, United States President Ronald Reagan made the decision that the first ordinary American to travel on board a space shuttle would be "one of America’s finest, a teacher."
Eleven thousand people applied. From these applicants, (32)a high school teacher named Christa McAuliffe was selected.
Christa was supposed to teach two lessons from space. In these lessons she would introduce the other astronauts, explain what they did, and talk about the technological advances that space travel had contributed to science. However, she never got the chance to teach those lessons.
The flight was scheduled to launch in January of 1986.(34)Unfortunately, on January 28, 1986, her space flight ended in tragedy. Seventy-three seconds after the spaceship was launched it exploded, killing everyone on board. But Christa’s message continues. Her motto was "I touch the future, I teach;"(35)Christa’s presence in the space program helped increase interest in astronomy and space travel. Her exposure as the Teacher in Space reflected well on all teachers.
In many ways she is still teaching. In 1990 the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium was opened in her memory in New Hampshire. Its purpose is to educate and entertain learners of all ages in the sciences and humanities. Since its opening, more than 30, 000 school children and thousands of adults have visited the planetarium.
Christa has been remembered in other ways, too. A movie and a documentary have been made about her life and numerous public schools have been named after her.
