    Confucius, an educator and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history, explicitly expressed his view on the relationship between learning and thought in the remark "Learning without thought means labor lost, thought without learning is perilous." My understanding of the remark is that to study and not to contemplate the acquired knowledge is a waste of energy, while to contemplate without immersing yourself in your studies is potentially dangerous.
    This proverb criticizes two wrong learning methods. The first is that if one just read something without thinking, he is unable to understand the exact meaning of what he has read, thus he cannot reasonably put the book knowledge into practice. Even worse, he may get confused. The second is that if one just sits around and aimlessly buries himself in his reverie, instead of being down-to-earth and learning practical and useful knowledge, he will end up with nothing.
    Hence, what we should do is to combine learning with thought. Otherwise it is impossible for us to learn effectively.
