答案                 Class Attendance Should Not Be Mandatory
Checking attendance is a common practice in Chinese colleges and universities. As is known to many university students, however, one of the criteria of a good course is whether or not the instructor checks attendance. Nothing can be more annoying and upsetting than a roll-call enthusiast. It is thus my belief that university students shall have the freedom of choice when it comes to attending classes.
To start with, the majority of university students are grownups; grownups should be intellectually and mentally capable of taking responsibility of their own decisions. Ever since a kid enters kindergarten, school attendance has been compulsory for all. Roll-call is a necessary method to regulate the behaviors of students who are intellectually immature. Nonetheless, attending classes in universities should be a matter of self-discipline. When a university student selects a course, he or she takes on the duty of completing the course and earning the credits. Therefore, instructors should not take the burden to oblige everyone to show up.
Secondly, poor class attendance is not so much the fault of students as is the problem of the teacher. For example, when our faculty offered the course of Roman Mythology, one professor gave such passionate and inspiring lectures that the classroom was filled with drop-ins. In comparison, another professor had to check attendance to nail everyone to the spot. If a course fails to attract attendants, it could be inferred that something is problematic either in the content of the course or the way in which lectures are delivered. Imposing mandatory attendance and punishing those who skip classes are to lay the blame of a faulty educating method on students.
Last but not least, full attendance does not necessarily mean good academic performance. Many students who never miss a single class tend to remain silent throughout the whole time without interacting with the teacher. On the contrary, some talented students play truant occasionally but surprisingly finish the course with an A grade. It is evident that compulsory class attendance is a rigid rule inapplicable to suit different needs of students. Simply showing up for class is no longer adequate. I believe that as long as a student is able to complete the course work and pass prescribed examinations, class attendance should not be forced.
To conclude, the principal task of education is to impart knowledge, share ideas and inspire thinking. Rather than going all out to keep everyone in the classroom, universities should spend more time in improving the quality of teaching.
