答案     With the elevation of China’s status in the world, Chinese people have more and more opportunities to communicate with people from other countries. However, much embarrassment may occur in cross-cultural communication. Many people think that language is the biggest barrier. But I am inclined to believe that the most important thing in cross-cultural communication is to understand and respect different cultures.
    In my opinion, the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures to cross-cultural communication is self-evident. Language is part of culture, so it embodies its culture. And problem aroused in cross-cultural communication may be attributed to culture conflicts instead of language differences. For example, it is impolite to ask English-speaking people such privacy as age and salary. However in China, these questions can show our concern for others. As a result, we are likely to have communication failure if we fail to understand and respect certain manners.
    Based on the above discussion, it is very necessary to understand and respect other cultures before we participate in cross-cultural communication. And I want to suggest: to avoid embarrassment or conflicts in cross-cultural communication, learn others’ cultures first.
